South Street's Fall Fest Got Rained Out. The October 17 Replacement Is Built From Neighborhood Anniversaries.

October 15, 2026

South Street Fall Fest was set for Saturday, September 26. Organizers canceled it because of a Nor'easter forecast, and PhillyVoice reported that it would not be rescheduled. The South Street District is filling the gap on Saturday, October 17, from noon to 8 p.m., with what it calls The Big Pivot: South Street Block Party Weekend. Most blocks in the new lineup have a named host, and those hosts are mostly businesses that already operate on that block. Three of them are marking anniversaries that day.

So the street's fall event no longer depends on one festival date. It depends on a bookstore that turns 50 this year, a thrift operation that turns 21 and a music venue that turns 10.

What the September Plan Looked Like

The District's original listing described an eight-block festival along the corridor. It had themed blocks, music, food and drink, immersive art, local craft vendors and cultural programming. PhillyVoice's summary named the headline attractions as a Renaissance fair, a skate park and an Oktoberfest. The District's own page now simply says the event was "canceled due to weather."

The Renaissance fair and the skate park both return in the October 17 plan, and this time each one belongs to a specific business. Queen & Rook runs the Renaissance fair and Nocturnal runs the skate park. There's no Oktoberfest on the new list, though Brauhaus Schmitz is hosting a fall beer garden. The replacement also grew by one block, from eight to nine.

The October 17 Lineup, East to West

Here is the District's block-by-block plan, starting at the river end:

  1. 100 block: Queen & Rook's Renn Faire. The board-game café is at 123 South Street, and its website lists a library of more than 2,500 games plus food and a bar. According to PhillyVoice, it opened in 2019 and moved to this bigger South Street space in 2024.
  2. Headhouse Plaza: Pops on the Plaza with Settlement Music School, from 3 to 5 p.m.
  3. 200 block: Halloween B.Y.O.C. with Bridget Foy's, from 2 to 9 p.m. It's a car-free afternoon and evening with music, games and a screening of Hocus Pocus. The QVNA listing names its supporters: Queen Village Neighbors Association, Society Hill Civic Association, Bella Vista Neighbors Association, Washington Square West Civic Association, Bridget Foy's, Philadelphia Film Society, Councilmember Mark Squilla and State Representative Mary Isaacson.
  4. 300 block: Open Streets.
  5. 400 block: MilkBoy's anniversary stage.
  6. 500 block: Nocturnal's skate park.
  7. 600 and 700 blocks: Wooden Shoe's 50th anniversary block party. The 700 block also has Brauhaus Schmitz's fall beer garden.
  8. 700 block of S. 5th Street: Philly AIDS Thrift's 21st anniversary block party.
  9. Various locations: Philadelphia Open Studio Tours. Brooke Lanier Fine Art at 820 S. 4th Street is open October 17 and 18 from noon to 6 p.m., with an artist talk on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.

Seven of the nine entries carry a business name. The two that don't are Open Streets and the citywide studio tour.

The Anniversaries Holding It Together

Wooden Shoe Books, 50 years

Wooden Shoe's history page says the store opened in December 1976. It calls itself "an all-volunteer democratic collective, run by consensus," and confirms that 2026 is its 50th anniversary. It didn't start on South Street. The first store was at 112 South 20th Street, near Sansom, and one early staffer remembered it like this:

"was just a dark, nasty, basement that was really cramped"

Today the store's homepage lists 704 South Street. Its party takes up two blocks of the October 17 plan, more than any other host gets.

Philly AIDS Thrift, 21 years

Philly AIDS Thrift was founded in 2005 to support local communities affected by HIV/AIDS, through its thrift stores and its grants. The grant program started in 2014 and has since given more than $5 million to HIV/AIDS programs. That same year the organization took over Giovanni's Room, keeping the bookstore going, and in 2018 it bought the building. Giovanni's Room is at 345 S. 12th Street, so the Queen Village part of the story is the flagship at 710 S. 5th Street. The 21st anniversary party takes place outside that store.

The block party isn't new. Last year, PGN covered the 11th annual party on September 13, 2025, which marked the organization's 20th year with music, vendors and contests. This year it is one of the main pieces of the District's October lineup.

MilkBoy South Street, 10 years

MilkBoy opened at 401 South Street on August 2, 2016, which makes 2026 its tenth year. Its live-music stage on the 400 block is billed as a 10th anniversary celebration.

These three anniversaries cover a wide range of businesses: a volunteer bookstore, a charity retailer and a for-profit music venue. All three have a milestone year in 2026, and the District's replacement lineup gives each of those milestones its own block.

The Same Blocks Are Next in Line for Construction

The street hosting the October 17 party is also the site of a long water main project. On the Philadelphia Water Department's page for Project #20661, South Street Main Replacements, the project is listed in pre-construction, with an estimated start of October 2026 and estimated completion in late 2027. These segments are getting new water mains:

  • South Street, from Front Street to S. 8th Street
  • Lombard Street, from S. Front Street to S. 2nd Street
  • S. 2nd Street, from Lombard Street to South Street
  • S. 3rd Street, from Lombard Street to Gaskill Street
  • Kater Street, from S. Hancock Street to S. Howard Street, and from S. 5th Street to S. 6th Street
  • Hancock Street, from Gaskill Street to South Street

PWD says customers may see limited water interruptions while the work is underway. A PWD engineer and inspector will be on-site every day, and their contact information is posted on the project page for questions about the job site.

The 100 through 700 blocks used for the party fall inside the stretch PWD plans to dig up over roughly the next year. The start date is an estimate, so it's best to read the project page as a schedule and not as confirmation that work has started.

A second utility project is coming farther south. Philadelphia Gas Works and QVNA have set a community meeting on PGW's Pipeline Improvement Project for Wednesday, October 28, from 6 to 7 p.m., at 709 S. 5th Street. The affected blocks are the 700 to 1000 blocks of E. Passyunk Avenue, the 500 block of Fitzwater, the 800 block of S. 6th, the 500 block of Kauffman and the 600 block of Carpenter. PGW plans to present its timeline and expected impacts at the meeting.

After the 17th, Older Institutions Host the Calendar

For the rest of the fall, events around Queen Village are mostly hosted by organizations that have been in the neighborhood far longer than a single season:

Sunday, October 25, 3 to 4 p.m. The Publick Pleasure presents Lost at Sea: Seafaring Music & the Sailor Cenotaphs of Old Swedes' Church at Gloria Dei, also known as Old Swedes' Church, at 916 S. Swanson Street. The program features shanties, ballads and instrumental music played on period instruments. General admission is $35, or $30 if bought before the day of the show, and student tickets with ID are $15. Each ticket includes a drink. Tickets are sold through Preserve Old Swedes.

Wednesday, October 28, 7 p.m. Old Pine Street Church, at 412 Pine Street, hosts The Unknown Abigail Adams. The church notes that John Adams attended Old Pine during the Revolution.

Thursday, October 29, 6 p.m. Hill-Physick House, at 321 S. 4th Street, holds its annual Halloween fall fundraiser, Battle of the Eras: 1776 vs. 1976, as a nod to the nation's 250th. Tickets are $75.

Saturday, October 31, 4 to 8 p.m. Halloween at Headhouse takes place at the Headhouse Shambles, 2nd and Pine Streets.

Sunday, November 15, noon to 2 p.m. Friends of Bainbridge Green hosts a Love Your Park cleanup on Bainbridge Street between 3rd and 5th, with weeding, planting, sweeping and painting.

Saturday, November 21, 4 to 8 p.m. The South Street District's Holiday Night Market comes to Headhouse Plaza with a tree lighting, Santa, live entertainment, vendors and seasonal food and drinks.

Two new places on the side streets could join that list. Divers Club, a wine bar planned for 733 S. 4th Street, was reported as a fall 2026 opening, but as of an October 8 report it had no official opening date. Eggcetera Haus is planned for 625 S. 6th Street as an all-day spot, with coffee and brunch in the morning and dinner and cocktails at night. Its opening date had not been announced.
